On September 22, 2026, Snapmaker and Phaetus announced the Snapmaker × Phaetus Liber High Flow Hotend for U1. This replacement hotend increases the printer’s ability to melt and deliver filament, aiming to improve efficiency when printing large models and similar parts.

For a closer look at the U1 itself and my experience using it, see my hands-on Snapmaker U1 review (Japanese).

I actually saw a prototype of this hotend back in March at TCT Asia 2026 in Shanghai. You can catch a glimpse of it in this Instagram reel. Now that it has been officially announced as a product, let’s take a look at how it works and the performance figures released by the manufacturer.

The price is US$34.99 for a single hotend or US$119 for a four-pack bundle. Actual retail prices vary by market.

The key feature is its internal structure, which uses Phaetus’s “Liber Split-Flow Melt Channel”—as seen in RapidoX, too. According to the manufacturer, branching the material’s flow path increases the heat-transfer surface area relative to its volume, helping heat reach the filament’s core more efficiently. A DLC-coated hardened steel nozzle and a precision-machined, seamless heat break are combined into a hotend designed specifically for the U1.

I also explored the manufacturing approach behind Phaetus and its parent company, Runice, in my exclusive Runice/Phaetus interview.

According to the manufacturer, comparison tests under matched energy-use conditions showed increases in volumetric flow of 66% for PLA, 87% for ABS, and 43% for PETG HF over the U1 Stainless Steel Hotend.

Volumetric flow is the amount of molten material a hotend can deliver per second. When printing the perimeters of large models or broad areas of infill at high speed, the printer’s motion performance is only part of the equation: its ability to melt and supply enough material can also become a limiting factor. Liber is an upgrade aimed at increasing that melting and delivery capacity.

However, “up to 87% higher volumetric flow” does not directly translate into an equivalent improvement in print speed or print time. Actual print time also depends on model geometry, acceleration and deceleration, cooling, slicer settings, and other factors. The manufacturer’s main examples are large models and long, continuous extrusion paths—prints where material delivery is more likely to limit speed.

Durability is also part of the design. The nozzle uses hardened steel with a hardness of HV 725–780 and a DLC coating for wear resistance. The heat break has an internal surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.2 μm. Precision machining and the design of the mating surfaces aim to reduce material buildup, leakage, and clogging. The manufacturer also reports reduced stringing and oozing in its comparison tests.

Snapmaker describes this collaboration as part of its effort to expand what the U1 can do by working with specialist manufacturers. For U1 owners who regularly print large functional parts or prototypes, it adds another option for increasing the hotend’s melting capacity.

And as I write this draft, my Liber High Flow Hotend is actually in the air… It should be arriving at my home soon. This article covers the announcement, but once it arrives, I want to see how much difference it makes to actual print times and surface finish.
